Israel Alter: The Lion in the Pack

Israel Alter was the Oberkantor (Chief Cantor) of Hannover Germany, between 1925 and 1935. He is known to be among the leading Cantors of the golden Age of Hazzanuth and a master of combining East and West European Jewish musical traditions. This presentation explores his influence as Ba’al T’filah (emissary of the people), composer, teacher, pedagogue, and innovator.
